Heatstroke Prevention and Emergency Response Measures

Heatstroke Prevention and Emergency Response Measures

I. Preventive Measures

  1. Avoid Heat Exposure
    • Minimize outdoor activities between noon and 4 PM, the hottest part of the day. Avoid prolonged intense exercise or labor under direct sunlight.
    • Take regular breaks during high-temperature work and wear light-colored, loose, breathable clothing to promote heat dissipation.
  2. Hydrate Properly
    • Drink cool water or electrolyte beverages (e.g., sports drinks) in small, frequent amounts. Avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks.
    • Replenish fluids by consuming water-rich fruits and vegetables like watermelon and cucumber after excessive sweating.
  3. Environmental Controls
    • Keep indoor spaces well-ventilated and use air conditioning or fans to lower temperatures.
    • Wear wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen outdoors to reduce UV exposure.
  4. Protect Vulnerable Groups
    • Elderly individuals, children, pregnant women, and those with chronic conditions (e.g., cardiovascular diseases, obesity) require extra protection. Never leave them alone in enclosed hot environments (e.g., parked cars).
  5. Daily Health Management
    • Ensure adequate sleep and schedule rest periods to avoid midday exhaustion.
    • Maintain a light, easily digestible diet and avoid greasy or high-calorie foods.

II. Emergency Response

  1. Remove from Heat
    • Immediately move the person to a cool, shaded, or air-conditioned area. Loosen tight clothing to ensure proper breathing.
  2. Cooling Measures
    • Apply cool wet towels or ice packs (wrapped in cloth) to the forehead, neck, armpits, and groin to enhance heat dissipation.
    • Use alcohol wipes on the skin for additional cooling, avoiding sensitive areas like the eyes and mouth.
  3. Rehydration and Monitoring
    • Offer diluted saltwater or sports drinks in small sips if the person is conscious. Extend rehydration intervals if vomiting occurs.
    • If unconscious, place them in a recovery position (on their side) to prevent choking and seek immediate medical help.
  4. Severe Heatstroke Treatment
    • For severe cases (body temperature >40°C, seizures, or coma), call emergency services immediately. Continue cooling during transportation.
    • Do not administer fever-reducing medication, as it may mask symptoms.
  5. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Methods
    • Apply moderate pressure to the Renzhong acupoint (philtrum) to aid consciousness recovery.

Important Note‌: Seek medical attention promptly if symptoms (dizziness, weakness, high fever) persist or worsen, regardless of severity.
